How Social Media can Help Students Study
A recent poll by McGraw-Hill found that 80% of students use mobile technology to study. Social media technology helps the students stay connected, self-regulate their classes, create personal learning networks, and saves time. So what are the ways educators can use social media to help students? Here are a few examples according to a recent article on the topic.
- Create a community for a course (i.e. #eme6414)
- Create a group for collaboration
- Continue the conversation
- Record classes on Skype or Periscope for those who miss it.
- Use Google Hangouts to facilitate study groups
- Post questions to influencers on Twitter
- Organize Learning Resources
- Use collection-sharing tools Pinterest or Tumblr
- Post documents on Google Drive or Google Docs
- Supplement Course Materials
- Watch YouTube videos
- Follow subject-matter hashtags on social media
- Search social channels for keywords or experts
Hi Debra,
ReplyDeleteI found your blog post title interesting and had to read what you had discovered. When the EME6414 first started, I wasn't sold on social media being a good use of technology for educational purposes. However, as we have jumped into the various Web 2.0 tools, I have opened my mind to the possibility of learning from social media platforms. We're on week 4 and I have certainly learned a lot. The article by McGraw-Hill highlighted other statistics that caught my attention; 62% of students say technology helps them feel better prepared and 48% say technology helps them save time.
Those statistics reminded me of an undergraduate class I took on geography. In the class we had to memorize all 192 countries. Each week we were quizzed for identifying the location of each country on a map AND our ability to spell each country correctly. I remember in the first week Google searching games to play to learn where each country is located. It was such a helpful tool to learn in a fun way. Today, there are so many quiz options for this topic. Each with their own focus on how the learner interacts with the technology and feedback.
